The science behind the book title
I spent over three hours finding the right title for this book. It was clear from the start that the title had to include the words “Picture prompts.” “Story prompts for stories and more” was the working title.
Since it is a nonfiction book, the name had to be chosen carefully to appeal to the net savvy, educated parents, authors and teachers. A bit of science had to be brought in. The emotional value (EMV) score helps to gauge which titles/ headlines would appeal to potential buyers. A higher score above 50% means it will appeal to more number of buyers and vice versa. The following are a few names I explored.
SNO | Title | EMV SCORE |
1 | Build creativity with picture prompts- a resource book for teachers and parents | 25% |
2 | Story prompts for budding minds | 33.33% |
3 | Create imagination and vocabulary with picture prompts | 42.86% |
4 | Build creativity and vocabulary with picture prompts | 42.86% |
5 | Create vocabulary and creativity with picture prompts | 57.14% |
When the Book cover returned after designing, it was still titled “Create creativity and vocabulary with picture prompts.”
When I sent the cover to author Santhini Govindan, she suggested we replace the word ‘create’ with kindle, ignite or spark.
So I set to work with the EMV score and zeroed in on the word ‘Spark’ as a suitable replacement for ‘Create.’
SNO | Title | EMV SCORE |
1 | Kindle creativity and vocabulary with picture prompts | 42.86% |
2 | Ignite creativity and vocabulary with picture prompts | 42.86% |
3 | Spark creativity and vocabulary with picture prompts | 57.14% |
The book formatting guys accidentally entered the wrong title which had an EMV score of over 60%. I am not sharing the name of the title as I hope to use it for one of our forthcoming books.
All the hours I spent on deciding the title finally paid off. The book’s title appears on the first page in the selected category on Amazon.com and Amazon.in. That’s half the battle won.
Now I am off to promote the eBook.
